Data 2 Documents

Declarative content management expressed in RDF

Welcome to the Data 2 Documents project

Data 2 Documents (d2d) is a vocabulary for constructing ‘documents’ out of ‘data’. It does so by breaking down web documents into a recursive hierarchy of small identifiable pieces of content that as such become a resource in the web of data. Hence, it helps bride the gap between the ‘Web of Documents’ and the ‘Web of Data’.

The vocabulary has a strong relation with semantic elements in HTML5 and allows for a declarative form of content management purely expressed in RDF. Furthermore, it facilitates easy publication of existing Linked Data in web documents and a novel way of sharing complex content between web documents, e.g. as in syndication.

Data 2 Documents can be used for data-intensive sites that use RDF-based Linked Data, as well as for regular web sites with the added benefit of being able to share and integrate content in various forms with/from other sites.

Several examples of d2d can be found on our special example Web site http://example.d2dsite.net. This website also uses Data 2 Documents, and there are the sites of the evaluation, such as http://kmvu03.biographynet.nl.

Details of the experiments

In Oktober 2015 we organised two evaluation experiments, E1 and E2. With the first experiment (E1), we wanted to test the usability and usefulness for expert users, resembling potential power-users of our system. For this we recruited users who are proficient in Linked Data and Web development techniques. With the second experiment (E2), we wanted to test our approach on users who are technically minded but have limited knowledge and practical experience with Linked Data and Web development. These participants should resemble potential casual users of our system as well as beginners who are trying out these new technologies, but are not yet very familiar with them. For this second experiment, we recruited a larger group of students in Computer Science-related Master programs.

For the first experiment, we managed to recruit only a relatively small group of 7 participants, but for the second experiment we got a large group of 73 students. Due to their group sizes, the second experiment provides us with more reliable data than the first one, but both can give us valuable insights.

Below are the pointers to the full evaluation results and data files. Where needed, files have been anonymized. The original non-anonymized data is available at requests, if sufficiently motivated.
